Moscow School—19th century The Deesis, meaning “intercession,” is an iconographic theme particularly prevalent in the Byzantine Church; it depicts Christ in glory, seated on a throne and holding a book, between the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, whose hands are outstretched toward Christ as they intercede with him on behalf of humanity. On one side, there is a small compartmentalized drawer. It has a lovely oak interior and comes with its original lock and key. Its top is adorned with luminous white Carrara marble, delicately framed by a finely crafted openwork brass border that highlights its precious character. The border is decorated with four bronze medallions. The piece rests on four tapered legs connected by a crossbar and ending in small splayed feet. Superb patina and in magnificent condition.
