Moscow School—19th century The Deesis, meaning “intercession,” is an iconographic theme particularly prevalent in the Byzantine Church; it depicts Christ in glory, seated on a throne and holding a book, between the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, whose hands are outstretched toward Christ as they intercede with him on behalf of humanity. Its top is adorned with luminous white Carrara marble, delicately framed by a finely crafted openwork brass border that highlights its precious character.
